Established in 1978, the Global Environment Monitoring System Water aims at improving the knowledge on the quality of freshwater resources worldwide. The GEMS/Water Programme builds on a large network of partners in national and international agencies, non-governmental organizations and research institutes to improve water quality monitoring capacities, support regional and global assessments and maintain the most comprehensive global water quality mointoring system.
